A volume in a volume
The Levent villa private social club’s architectural design is an expression of the client’s aspirations to have a place to host guests and employee social activities, as well as contribute to the quality of community inIstanbul’s unique Levent neighborhood. Three formal concepts:
1) continuity of characters + motifs,
2) contrasting geometries + materials, and
3) interlocking volumes + program were harnessed to guide the design from the whole to its most intimate detail.
Sustainable design is always our practices priority through the principles of: intensify space, be resource thrifty, use local materials, amplify local labour ‘know-how’, and employ natural light and ventilation systems.
The social club consists of a dining for 30+ and 4 guest rooms.

Nese Fabrikası
A kindergarten and day-care as a community center in the heart of Turkey's industrial zones. The brief calls the design is adaptable to the 7 micro-climates and geography's of Turkey and agile to different size and parcel constraints. A modular system was developed with a central forum, inner clusters, outdoor learning rooms. Critical to the design was dust prevention, prevalent in industrial zones of the region, and a seamless indoor/outdoor play as most regions of Turkey have four distinct seasons.

Provicator for Discussion & Ecclectisism
The interior design for SALT research set in the atrium of the historic Ottoman Bank building was envisioned as a public tool and a vehicle to research, exchange, engage, and create content, but also as a distinct place-based steward of contemporary cultures. Digitally sampling the cities and the building is unique in our process of architectural design. Sampling the city through multi-modal digital platforms to create and compose narratives; then spatially re-collaged relations to create the 'sense' of place. Our design narratives are most clearly articulated in the 3 distinct objects: A) site + sound, B) light + aperture, and C) the atrium's 19th century ornament + view. The design approach pursued both millenniums of the 19th C historic building uniqueness and the new 21st C library in a choreographed composition. Our firm's sound sampling software, Adobe Illustrator's scripting platform, and Rhino's parametric surface mapping underpinned the concept to realization.

A campus to inspire the scientific mind set in the natural ecology of the Bophorus.
Context of multi-disciplinary research and innovation for the 21st Century: RASATHANE SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS is envisioned as a mix of university long-term research and advancement of knowledge application to end-users. This new campus plan in the Üsküdar Rasathane peak unites the ongoing pursuits and goals of BOSPHORUS UNIVERSITY and Istanbul Greater Municipality’s aspiration to revitalize the urban cores. The master plan for the 300,000+ m2 campus calls for a multiple phased full build-out of 30,000 m2 of project based research, laboratories, learning areas, communication areas, social life, visitor areas, cultural activities and open space. The plan for BUKK combines an intricate play between urban design, architecture and complex programmatic requirements of specialized advanced research and social-life. The designing a new advanced science center hub along the Bosphorus in Istanbul meant a precise notion for the facilities of a global research hub that could simultaneously work as a dynamic urban design concept and become an inspiring architectural expression. As formulated by BU’s scientific community the design realization would be:
• Inspired by the natural and historical setting of the Bosphorus;
• Embody thespirit of ‘Rasathane’
• Belong to the21st century society of Istanbul’s unique seasonal life and aesthetic,
• Be a distinguished contemporary landmark in regional advanced research institutions; and

Augmenting Spatiality
City Of Sydney Laneway 2012
The ambient qualities of urban ecologies―as we as civilizations create them in specific geographic locations―are coming to the forefront of cultural production. With the advent of digital media and environmental consciousness more than any other point in human history we are able to access the formal qualities of the ambient environment in terms of the built, social and natural environments. Through sensors, databases and visualization we can collect information on the ambient dynamics of cities, sound, light, air quality, acoustics, human movement, ecological dimensions, social preferences and their multiplicity of interactions. And while social media and global commerce has transcended the confines of place, its impact on culture has made place-centric experiences and spatial awareness more important not less.
RAP PAR―a team from Istanbul, Turkey―proposes a sound and light installation, namely Augmenting Spatiality for Abercrombie Lane. The installation’s premise is to reveal specific ambient qualities of Sydney and Istanbul as distinct urban ecologies, but also like a cultural exchange, put their sampled qualities into a dialogue that responds to one another. The dialogue will be framed on a spatial narrative referring to ‘equal’ volumes of spaces to create sequence, compression, gateway, perception and extension in the formal geometry of the space. Abercrombie Lane was specifically selected as it is the only site that is common to many of the urban spaces in Istanbul, but also as it does not receive direct sun to the ground which creates a very suitable environment for light installation. RAP PAR is taking Beyoğlu-Karaköy axis as its main spatial center to collect sound, and specifically İstiklal Street as the ‘main spine’ (with particular resemblances with the George Street, including current urban transformation urgencies) to form the background sound vocabulary of ‘equal’ volumes that are connected to this main axis.

Story Telling With Landscape and Sequence
The story of making wine is romantic, vivid, and memorable, but when told in an organized industrial zone, architecture takes center stage to orchestrate the immediate environment and inspire the narrative of wine making. On this factory site a visitor’s learning center (planned for 2012), a botanical garden celebrating the flora of wine-making, the production facility, and management offices are all expected to contribute to the narrative. Visitors move through the production facility defined by the geometries and materials of the past and present architecture of regional wine making. Wood is used for all engagements with the visitor, while the pure oval/circle geometries are used for points of reflection and transformation in the narrative.
16,000 m2 winery on a 52,510 m2 industrial zone.

Providing over 800+ cars, public gathering for 1,000+, and four open park landscapes for engaging the city.
Where else in Istanbul to have snow gardens, a spring blossom park, sunset decks, a level sloped path to walk, lots of easy to navigate parking, bi-modal transit access, a market place for specialty goods, the outdoor theater of urban life, a public venue for cultural events...then the precipice of the PERA / GALATA / SIŞHANE / TÜNEL districts of BEYOĞLU, Istanbul.

Contextual Immersion as Contrast
Urban infill sites of Beyoğlu's historic district are narrow, compact and have multiple identities like: the street side, the Bosphurus views, or the 'cumba'. The area is also stewards some of Istanbul's finest turn of the century iron works and stone facades. The facade designs express these different identities and morphology of iron works in today's cultural influences. For the resident's themselves inviting extensive natural light, openness to the views to the Bosphorus (or garden) and contemporary finely crafted interior finishes were a priority. The apartments offer a contrast of place while the building design blends into its unique and decorative context.
Apartments for urban life on an extraordinarily narrow lot of Istanbul's historic Beyoğlu district. 5 apartments of varying features, views, but all with stretching verandas to the sea breezes.

Esma Sultan Okulu // Esma Sultan School
Creating a place in the community for Learning, Exchange & Expression
Located in oneof Besiktas’ timeless neighborhood fabrics, the ‘mahalle’ community life is alive and lively. The mayor’s vision to create a ‘heart’ to the communitypublic life with the reconstruction of the elementary school called for ablurring of boundaries of school, recreation, theater and library. Thearchitectural design connects the upper and lower street life with a central cascading public street that flows through the center of the site. Either side of the street is defined by the civic program of the performing arts theater, the library and the formal entry to the elementary and kindergarten. Architectural massing invites the public into the center of the spine and gives the theater, elementary school and kindergarten unique identities. More subtly sculpted in the landscape of the public street is the library and recreation center. Common materials of the civic historic and contemporary construction of brick, granite and marble are used for the community ‘zones’, while materials of the recent contemporary city of aluminum and façade ceramic are used for the elementary and kindergarten. The result is a place for the community to congregate that is familiar, a place inviting for all ages, and a place that is about a shared future as a community. 2012 Architecture -
Summa Vineyard & Retreat
Capturing Vistas & Celebrating Time
The rolling hills of the agriculturally rich landscape of Maldova inspired Summa’s aspiration to create a boutique wine factory and intimate hospitality retreat. The master plan’s structure is underpinned by the traditional organizing principles of a wine estate: axis, plaza, vista, meandering path, stone factory, distinguished villa, while the forms of the landscape and architecture embraces the contemporary face of the Summa organization and life-style around the wine industry. The architectural spaces are organized in varying scales to create grand and intimate spaces in which to celebrate the near and distant views, enjoy the vineyards and wine, as well as celebrate time passed with family and friends.

Moldava’nın yumuşak tepeli coğrafi yapısı ve zengin tarımsal toprak örtüsü, Summa’nın butik şarap üretimi ve samimi bir misafirhane/otel yaratma hedefi için ilham kaynağı oldu. Master plan düzeni geleneksel şarap tesis organizasyon ilkelerini vurgulamaktadır: Görsel aks, meydan, odak manzara, dolanan patika, taş üretim alanı, seçkin villa. Bitki örtüsü, peyzaj biçimleri ve mimari Summa’nın organizasyonunu, şarapçılık etfafındaki hayat tarzını kucaklamaktadır. Büyükten küçüğe çeşitlilik gösteren, yakın ve uzak manzara seyrine imkan tanıyan mahaller ile mimari, üzüm bağlarını ve şarap zevki kadar, aile ve dostlar arasında keyifli zamanı kutlamayı amaçlar.

Figures Washed with Light
Moving up to the sky, seeing city through the clouds, moving people worldwide, sincerity of quality, pioneering engineering excellence, and teamwork for knowledge in service drove the formal expressions and workplace organization of the new Otis Headquarters in Istanbul. An intense collaboration with the client team created a vibrant work environment with high visibility between departments, concentrated team spaces and a place that communicate their organization are leaders in the 21st Century. Key to the workscape was the communication of the corporate culture, commitment to customer service and timeless values of the global company. Economy of means was also a highest priority to show that lean budgets coupled with technical ‘know-how’ and creative thinking can create vibrant and dynamic environments. The graphic designer, Esen Karol, and landscape designer, Arzu Nuhoglu, worked intimately within the architectural design team to realize a multi-dimension environment is subtle, but bold in its visual language. UHeM // Ulusal Yüksek Başarımlı Hesaplama Merkezi
An Information Cistern for the 21st Century
The demands for highest security facilities and inclusive social programs required a dialogue of two contrasting interlocking buildings – one of light + glass and one of mass +concrete. Taking advantage of the subtle terrain, the high-security building’s mass is nestled into the landscape for both security and thermal value to temper the cooling loads of the server room. The lighter social building volume is a composition of insulated spandrel glass and colored glass creatinga pixilated image of the Istanbul Technical University’s urban Congress Valley Campus. The glass structure reaches out to the campus as a cubical lantern to promote it as a place that welcomes multi-disciplinary research. The tail of the space penetrates deep into the core of the high-security volume and mitigates betweenthe zoned operations and administration or academic programs.

Hafif arazi eğimi sayesinde, yüksekgüvenlikli kapalı kütle, güvenliği sağlamak ve ısı kazancını indirgemek içinkorunaklı bir şekilde toprak içine yeralmaktadır. Renkli opak ve saydam camları ile hafif sosyalbina kütlesi, Istanbul Teknik Üniversitesi’nin kentsel kongre vadisi kampüsününpiksellenmiş kompozisyonunun yansımasıdır. Cam kütle kübik bir fener olarak disiplinler arası sosyal etkileşimiteşvik ederek kampüse uzanmaktadır. Mekanın devamı, yüksek güvenlikli kütleninçekirdeğinin içine ulaşmakta, yüksek güvenlikli data merkezi operasyonu ve ortagüvenlikli yönetim-akademik programlar mekanları arasında geçiş sağlamaktadır.

SEV Tarsus K8
Sculpted spaces express Tarsus's distinguished urban heritage.
The design brief articulated both explicit and implicit design criteria driven by an aspiration to commission a school campus with a distinct contemporary architectural character spirited in the land’s extraordinary pasts. Our entry is highly unique in its response to the design brief dimensions of urban fabric/context, archeological preservation/excavations, outdoor environments/places, sustainable design consumption/means of construction, affordability of investment/operating cost and pedagogical values provoked through place. The scheme was disqualified as a finalist by the jury for renovating the turn of the century agro-industry structures existing on the site.
1. Tarsus SEV İlköğretim Okulu Yeni Kampüsü Proje Yarışması * Antik çağa uzanan Tarsus'un tarihi kent merkezinde SEV Tarsus Amerikan Koleji yeni ilköğretim kampüsü geçmiş ile köprü kurarak ve geleceğe emsal bir eğitim, sosyal, kültürel bir merkez ve çekim alanı oluşturacaktır. Yeni kampüsde spor ve ‘forum’ büyük hacim işlevlerini içermektedir. Kampüsün batı yarısında eğitim işlevi içeren yapılar büyük bahçe alanını tanımlar; Doğu yarısında tarihi konak yönetim, diğer mevcut yapılar ve ekleri yemek/kafe, etkinlik, ziyaret ve arkeoloji merkezi gibi işlevleri içerir. Spor yapısı mevcut anonim tarihi dokuyu oluşturan çırçır depo yapıları çatı örtüsünün devamıdır(imar durumu ile çelişse bile tarihi mirasın çağdaş bir şekilde kullanılması gerekmektedir). Modern görünümdeki Cengiz Topel caddesi boyunca uzanan binada fen bilimleri işlevleri ve girişe yakın anaokul yer almaktadır. ‘Forum’ ortak sosyal/kültürel işlevleri içeren, üç ‘biçim’in(yapı parçasından) taşıdığı bir çatı örtüsü altında geçirgen bir şekilde yeraalmakta; İç/dış mekan arasında bir tansiyon oluşturarak ve çerçevelenen boşluklardan odak manzaraları yaratarak etkileşimi teşvik eden bir ‘eşik’ mekanı oluşturmaktadır. Forum yaklaşık 600 kişilik konferansa -demokratik toplu kullanıma imkan tanır (kapısı ve tanımlı giriş çıkışı yoktur). Forum düzeni etkileşim, iletişim ve performans deneyimini güçlendirmek amaçlı herdaim deneyimlenebilen yarı açık mahal olarak tasarlandı. Açık , yarı açık ve içeriden görsel bağlantılı performans alanları öğrenenin etkileşimini arttırmayı, sosyal özgüven ve yeteneklerini geliştirmeyi hedefler. Parçalı yapı kümeleri, geçirgen, korunaklı, gölgeli mahal ve darboğazlar ile doğal hava akımı güçlendirerek enerji kaynak kulanımı azaltılır. Çatı parçacıklı yapılar tarafından taşınarak bir bütün olarak yapı parçaları kümelerini örtmektedir. Bu yapım stratejisi ile minimum zemin alanı kullanılarak, karşılaşılacak muhtemel arkeolojik bulguların etkilenmesi engellenecektir. 2012 Architecture -
Istanbul Naval Museum // Istanbul Deniz Müzesi
Sequence, Reflection and Expression of Prowess
Celebration and preservation of the Ottoman sultan’s naval fleet is the primary focus of this institution. Located adjacent to a major multi-nodal transportation hub of the Bosporus in Istanbul, the site’s visual connection to the empire’s palace in the historic peninsula drives the site planning. The ‘departure ramp’ takes the visitor away from the daily activity of the plaza to start the journey with an‘image’ of the capitol in mind. The path in the ’container’ focuses on the artifacts and history embellished with effects of natural lighting and focused openings. The elevated and isolated ‘social box’ allows the mind to merge the accumulated knowledge along the journey with the vision of the empirical power of place, the Palace.

Vision planning for the future of education facilities in the region. Designed for the creative, scientific and socially responsible mind.
A journey of life long learning and exploration :: The vision for improving the lives of children worldwide is the vision Hafiz Holding set for the ambitious vision for a K12 school for young minds, creativity, knowledge and social responsibilityto flourish. The design will sensitively connect to its place, reflect thevibrancy of the community and marks the places as one of and for the future inJeddah. The strategy is to create a vibrant, future-oriented, learning accessible,social and community environment. Theplace anchors the community with a strong local presence and outreach program -both a contributor to the community and a receiver of the community. The visionreport set forth the goals, guidelines and initial architectural charactersketches for their vision. Working closely with Hafiz Holding and Fulya Sari(educational consultant) we articulated a vision that works in concert with theeducational organizational goals and the physical place. Educational andarchitectural scope prioritize connection to the environment, encouragement ofcuriosity & sharing, employment of advanced technology for learningsettings, and knowledge creation of centuries in astronomy, math, storytelling,energy and philosophy. The master plan will suggest a ‘journey’ in a complex ofinterlinked courts + gardens, each with a unique sense of place interlinkedwith inviting streets.

LocAware // Konum Bilinci
Place Informs the Forms of Place
Location awareness is inspired by the opportunities information technologies offers to experience and access place based content in cities. It enhances our cities' precious yet precarious networks of place. Geographic positioning systems are allowing unprecedented access to location based information, but ambient displays are just beginning to be understood in the information and place networks of a city. The LocAware exhibition is a compilation of discrete installations that explore this proposition about the formation of cities: The Materials, The Electronics, The Script, The Visualization, and The Form. Each installation is placed in dialogue with the others and questions the ways in which information technologies are provoking new futures, design participations, and imaginary utopias. The narration of the installations can be read as a design process in itself. This design process is the generator of the fifth installation, The Form. The Form installation is created from the data sampled during the first 2 weeks of the exhibition; they are 3D ‘print-outs’ of sound, color, and motion onto wood, steel and stone respectively.
